To build capacity and understanding of Rocky View Schools’ (RVS) student accommodation plans for the City of Airdrie.
On May 24th, 2011, the government announced a third round of P3 schools for Alberta. Within that package three schools were announced for RVS: a 900 capacity Gr. 5-8 school and a 1000 capacity Gr. 9-12 school for Airdrie; and a 500 capacity (potential build-out to 900 capacity) K-9 school for Chestermere. The province also approved within RVS’ boundaries two Francophone schools (one in Airdrie and one in Cochrane with a combined capacity of 700 student spaces). All of these projects are scheduled to be complete for the 2014/15 school year.
Prior to May 24, 2011, RVS was under the impression it needed to develop its own capital contingency plan to accommodate its growing student body. However, with the approval of these projects the jurisdiction is now able to focus on accommodation pressures for the two years leading up to the opening of these schools.
Looking ahead, it is now time to discuss how RVS can position itself to ensure it receives approval of future capital projects required to meet the needs of our growing communities.
